Canada is one of the largest agricultural producers and exporters in the world with wide range; grains and oil seeds account on a cash basis for 1/3 of production, 1/4 by red meat livestock, dairy 1/8 and horticulture and poultry eggs each about 1/10. Over 60% of the farms are in 3 provinces: Ontario, Alberta and Saskatchewan and a mere 3% of Canada's population are employed as a mechanized farmer. With diversity of its geography from mountain ranges, open parkland and glacier valleys Canada is the 5th largest agricultural exporter in the world; producing 85% of the world's maple syrup and the world's largest producer and exporter of flax seed, canola, pulses and durum wheat. Popular oil seeds and grains are wheat, canola, alfalfa, barley, flax, rye, oats, soybeans. Central Canada produces about 70% of milk production and is under a supply management system as well are poultry and eggs. Micro climates provide distinct advantages for fruits and vegetables including grapes for wine production, maple syrup, mustard seed, grass seed, honey production.
